Lodge Profile
Welcome to the Abbot Hugh Lodge of Mark Master Masons. In Freemasonry, the Mark Degree is one of ten masonic orders administered by Mark Masons Hall in London and takes its name from the mark or symbol with which the early stonemasons identified their work. These marks can still be found in many cathedrals and important buildings, including Selby Abbey. Within the Mark Province of North and East Yorkshire, there are 33 Mark Lodges with a membership of over 900. The Mark has a Provincial Grand Master who is supported by a Deputy, an Assistant, and a complement of 33 active Provincial Officers.
The Abbot Hugh Lodge was consecrated at Church Hill, Selby, on 23 May 1987, and like all Mark Masons, has a friendly masonic outlook. This feeling of friendship and belonging within the ‘Mark Family’ is experienced through the camaraderie and beneficence of its members, particularly so when visiting and widening our circle of masonic friends.
The Lodge is named after the 12th century Abbot Hugh, who started construction of the Abbey. A pillar etched with a diamond pattern, thought to be inspired by Durham Cathedral where Abbot Hugh received his training, stands as a tribute to him. Presented at the formation of the Lodge, our ashlars and keystone were hewn out of recycled marble from a butcher’s shop in Wide Street, Selby, courtesy of Brother John Joy, one of our founder members. These are regularly used in the ceremony of advancement to join the Mark Degree and help to explain our allegorical messages of hope and encouragement.
Meetings at Abbot Hugh are held four times per year on the fourth Wednesday of April, June, October and February, in the evenings. Afterwards, we dine on the premises at a traditional festive board, which is prepared by our professional caterers in the Lodge. If you would like to know more about visiting us as a Mark Master Mason, or joining the Mark Degree, please complete the contact form using the web link below:
Other Masonic Companion Orders also meet at the Church Hill building; if you are interested in joining or attending any of their meetings, please contact the relevant person listed below.
